Why Should You Get An Oil Change, Kitchener?

The concept of an oil change is really quite simple.

Vehicle engines have a great number of moving parts, and as these parts move and rub against one other, the friction creates a good amount of heat. Motor oil lubricates the engine and absorbs that heat, allowing those moving parts to work together effectively and without overheating.

Over time, however, engine oil breaks down and wears out. When it does, it becomes less effective at lubricating the engine and absorbing heat.

As an automobile owner, therefore, your goal is to change the oil in your engine before it breaks down and causes major engine troubles.

How Does An Oil Change Work?

For such an important maintenance task, the process of changing oil is not overly complicated, if you know what you're looking for.

Here's a handy step-by-step guide:

Warm up your vehicle

Get your car in the mood for an oil change by running it for about ten minutes, then shutting it down. The sludge will move out of the engine easier.

Drain the oil

After the car is raised by a jack for easier access, and the parking brake is set for security, you can remove the old oil by placing a pan or container underneath the oil drain plug, loosening the bolt with a standard wrench, and removing the plug.

Be careful to keep your hands and other vitals out of the way of the stream of hot oil. It should take no more than ten minutes to drain the old oil completely.

Put the oil pan back on

Put the plug bolt back in the pan (you may want to replace its washer while it’s off), and then screw the assembly back together.

Find and change the oil filter

Open up the hood and find the oil filter - a pop can-sized object that is usually under the hood, but sometimes beneath the car.

Loosen with the proper size oil-filter wrench, and then remove it, being careful not to drip oil. Replace it with the new one, making sure to rub the new filter’s seal with a little oil and using your hand to tighten it.

Refill

Find the oil cap under the hood of your car, and use the recommended weight and amount of oil for your model of car. Replace the cap, and in a few minutes, check to make sure your oil level falls between the Low and Full marks on the dipstick.

When To Get An Oil Change In Kitchener?

Oil is unquestionably the most important fluid in your engine, and regular oil changes are necessary in order for your oil to do its job of keeping the pistons clean and spry.

Your oil gets old and dirty with time and with driving and therefore loses its ability to clean and lubricate. Each car manufacturer will have a different recommendation as to when you need to change your oil, so check your owner's manual for your vehicle.

A general rule of thumb is to have your oil changed every 5,000 km of driving or every year, whichever comes first.

What Type of Oil Should You Choose?

There are basically 3 types of oil: mineral, synthetic, and semi-synthetic (a mixture of mineral and synthetic).

Synthetic oils are more expensive than mineral oils because they are produced using a more expensive chemical process. They tend to give enhanced performance, and they flow more easily when you start your engine and are more heat-resistant. Synthetic oil is especially useful during our Kitchener winters as it is much better at cold-weather starting than mineral oils.

It is important that you check your owner's manual to find out which type of oil is best for your vehicle.

Testimonial

"Nothing but the best! Until about 5 years ago, I was the type of person to bring my vehicle to Canadian Tire when repairs were needed. I figured that by bringing my vehicle to a large chain, I would have nothing to worry about with rates, customer service and quality. Long storey short, upon a visit to Canadian Tire years ago, none of my expectations were met as I felt ripped off and miss treated. That was the last time I brought my car there. When the time came for minor maintanance and an oil change, I brought my car to Hansma Automotive because a friend recommended it. Since my first visit, I have never been let down. The rates are more then fair, but what matters most to me was the honesty. Too often when bringing my car in for repairs, I was subject to aggressive sales tactics that made me feel that my car could explode if I didn't do the countless repairs "required" by Canadian Tire. Hansma Automotive had knowledgeable people working the desk who had an open discussion about what repairs I could expect in the future and what needed to be done soon. Its hard to find a mechanic that you feel you can trust, but if you use Hansma Automotive I can guarantee you will be as pleased as I was, and your days of searching for a trustworthy mechanic are over!!!
