Tire Change Kitchener FAQ's

How much does it cost to get your tires changed?

If your summer and winter tires are mounted on their own set of rims, then the cost to change them is much less. On average you should pay $20-$40.

If you only have one set of rims and you need to have your tires removed from the rims and the other set mounted, it takes longer and will cost more, anywhere from $60-$80.

What are tire rims?

Tire rims are the outer edge of a wheel that holds the tire. The rim is a part of your wheel, but it's not your whole wheel.

Should you buy an extra set of rims?

Because you need to swap your summer and winter tires twice a year, you could save on average about $150 over the lifetime of your tires by purchasing an extra set of rims. This savings includes the cost of buying the extra rims.

Can you change your tires yourself?

Yes, you can, especially if all of your tires are on their own rims, but you need to make sure that you have the right tools to do it safely.

You need to jack up your car and change your tires like you would change a flat tire. You also need to check the torque requirements of your car's owner's manual to make sure that your nuts are tightened properly.

The following video will show you how to change your tires yourself. If you are not comfortable changing your tires yourself or if you don’t have the tools or the time to do it, you can get a professional to do it for you.

Is changing tires dangerous?

As long as you have the right tools and you know what you are doing, it is safe to change your own tires. If you are uncomfortable doing it yourself, then contact a professional.

Should you pay for tire storage or can you store them yourself?

If you don't have the space to store your own tires, then paying to have them stored is a good option for you. Many dealerships and repair shops will offer this service.

If you do have space, and you have changed your own tires, then once your tires have been removed, clean them off and let them dry. Afterwards, place them in their own airtight plastic bag, and seal up the bag tightly with tape to keep moisture off of them.

If you had your tires changed by a professional, they probably put them into plastic protective bags for you. If you need a bag, lawn or leaf bags work well or you can purchase plastic tire bags online.

The following video will give you some additional and more detailed tips for storing your tires.

When should you change your summer and winter tires?

You should put your winter tires on when temperatures dip below 7 degrees Celsius, this usually occurs in the late fall before the snow and ice start.

You should change back to your summer tires when all the winter weather is finished and temperatures go above 7 degrees Celsius.

What is a tire changeover?

A tire changeover is when you remove your wheels, take your winter tires off the wheel rims and put your summer tires on the rims. You then install your wheels back on your vehicle.

Should You Get Your Tires Retourqued after a Changeover?

It is a good idea to have your tires retorqued after 50-100 km of driving after you’ve had a tire changeover. After you have your wheels changed, your mechanic has to judge how much to tighten the lug nuts. A

fter driving they could loosen or tighten which could cause your wheels to come off so they need to be adjusted to prevent this from happening.

What is the difference between summer, winter and all-season radials?

The difference between summer and all-season radials is that all-season tires have a much deeper tread than summer tires.

The type of rubber used in summer and winter tires differ so that they work best in the type of conditions during those seasons. The dedicated rubber compound in summer tires give you excellent grip and better handling on either wet or dry roads in warmer weather.

The rubber used for winter tires is designed to give you better grip on snow and ice-covered roads as well as in colder conditions.

When do you need to buy new tires?

Check your manufacturer's recommendations for how long your tires should last. Many vehicle manufacturers would recommend purchasing new tires after 6 years. Tire manufacturers often recommend replacing your tires after 10 years.

Is it important to get your tires balanced?

Yes. Balancing your tires will give you a smoother ride, lessen the wear on your tires and reduce the strain on your drivetrain.

Why should you get a wheel alignment?

A wheel alignment will improve the handling of your vehicle, keep it from pulling to one side or vibrating, and help your tires last longer.

Should you install tires in sets of 4?

We strongly recommend that your tires be installed in sets of four. However, if you only wish to install a pair, you should install them on the rear axle for safety purposes. For safety reasons, snow tires should only ever be installed in sets of four.
