What To Bring To G Test and Other Ontario Drive Test Questions & Answers

1. What to Bring to G Test

A class G Ontario driver’s licence allows you to to drive any car, van or small truck or combination of vehicle and towed vehicle up to 11,000 kilograms provided the vehicle towed is not over 4,600 kilograms.

You must have gone through the G1 and G2 phases of the graduated licence program. More on that below.

You must have a G2 to take your G road test.

Here’s what you need to bring to the G test, according to the Government of Ontario:

  1. Bring your G2 license after having it for at least 12 months.

  2. Drive an appropriate vehicle to your road test. The vehicle must be fit, in proper working condition.

  3. The vehicle must also be plated and insured. Proof of insurance is required.

  4. Glasses or contacts if you are required to wear them.

If your vehicle is not road worthy, you may not be able to do the test.

For example, if your windshield has been damaged by ice during our long Ontario winters, you won’t be able to drive.

2. What happens during a G test?

The basic elements covered in the G license road test at all testing centers include:

  • Driving on major roads and expressways including merging on and off, maintaining appropriate speed and space, signalling.

  • Turns, curves and lane changes.

  • Driving through intersections.

  • Driving in business areas.

Expect to drive on a major highway during your G test.

To help clear the backlog of in-vehicle passenger road tests resulting from COVID-19 restrictions and closures, the G road test has been temporarily modified at full-time DriveTest centres and temporary road test locations.

Until further notice, therefore, the G road test will not include these elements that are already covered in the G2 road test:

  • Parallel parking

  • Roadside stops

  • 3-point turn

  • Driving in residential neighbourhoods

Note: This is expected to change once the backlog has dissipated.

Part-time Travel Point locations will continue to offer the standard G road test.

3. Where and How to Practice

Getting comfortable behind the wheel is key to passing the G test. It can be anxiety inducing, but remaining calm is key, and the more you drive, the more it becomes second nature.

Working on an array of driving skills will prepare your for anything that the driving examiner throws your way.

We suggest practicing common (but occasionally tricky) driving skills, such as:

  • Three-point turns

  • Parallel parking

  • Backing into a parking space

  • Merging lanes safely

Make sure you practice on a variety of road types!

Driving as much as possible is the bst way to prepare for the G test.

It’s a good idea to spend some time on major highways and expressways. The majority of the G road test focuses on assessing your driving knowledge and skills on highways, so spend some time on the 400 series highways, or smaller local highways that have on and off ramps.

Highway 6 in Guelph and Highways 85 in the Waterloo region are good places to practice.

4. What is a G test?

A G test is the final stage of Ontario’s graduate licence process.

To apply for a licence, you must be at least 16 years old, pass a vision test and pass a test of your knowledge of the rules of the road and traffic signs.

After you pass these tests, you will enter Level One and get a Class G1 licence.

You must pass two road tests to become fully licensed. Passing the first road test lets you move to Level Two (Class G2), and the second one gives you full Class G driving privileges.

Make sure your car is in good shape before your G test.

You have a maximum of 5 years to get your full G license.

There are 3 possible scenarios if you fail your road test, which include:

  1. Take the test again if your G1 license has not expired.

  2. You will need to start the whole process again and pay the test fees if your G1 license has already expired.

  3. You can take your G1 test again if your G2 licence is about to expire. That will give you 5 more years as a G2 driver in which to finish the process.

Note: You must cancel your test at least 48 hours before your scheduled appointment. If you do not, then you will have to pay a cancellation fee.
